With CARB most likely being shut down, when can California residents install all aftermarket parts on our Trucks?

So with the EPA taking over with all the emission standards and pretty much eliminating CARB, I wanted to know if anyone had an inclination of when we on the West coast can start using parts that aren't CARB approved? I would love to get charge pipes, a tune, cold air intake, and maybe some freer flowing cats installed.

I know this can be a touchy subject, Just wanted to throw some bait into the ether and see what I could catch.

I have been waiting on the S&B cold air intake to pass CARB approval, but it just seems like it's not going to happen. But, with all the talk of CARB being shutdown or brought back in line with the EPA standards(which would make all the newly made cars more reliable and have more power to boot), I just want to be able to look online and see a performance mod that is available and click buy now.

If this isn't a good thread to post up here I understand and will either edit it or delete it.

Just some talking points for us in California that would like to mod our cars without the need for state regulations burdening that.

Ford Performance recently released a 50 state approved tune for the bronco raptor/ranger raptor. I am having one installed this week. Its rated at 455 horsepower. Not a super increase in power, but it purportedly makes good low end power, the Sport mode shifts smoother, deletes Start/Stop and according to a few folks, actually improved mpg a little. It does not void the warranty if it is installed by a Ford mechanic or a ACE certified mechanic.

Whipple tune with or without intercooler upgrade is also 50 state approved. Aftermarket Cat-back exhausts should also be 50 state legal. Those are your 2 biggest performance improvements to the Bronco Raptor. Performance tuning increases engine efficiency which reduces exhaust emissions.

I think, the federal emissions regulations only effect manufacturing of new vehicles sold in the U.S.

Whipple tuning does Not effect warranty. I was told, Ford Performance received the Whipple tune before Whipple released it to ensure future Ford Performance software updates don't have any conflicts, but I don't have any evidence to back up that claim.

Where did you hear CARB was going away? EPA=Federal and CARB=State. You can always have more strict regulations but no less than Federal regulations. States can make their own regulations (see State's legislative rights) that go beyond what our government requires at the Federal level which is why CARB is legal in the first place.

Edit: Please don't tell me you heard it on YouTube. Just because it's on the internet, doesn't mean it's true. Hard to believe, LOL.

Edit 2: If you google EPA to shut down CARB, the AI overlord will give you a pretty sensible breakdown of what's happening. Nothing I'm reading will have any effect on the tuner industry (for the better) and nothing will really change for ECU tuning or modifying passenger cars and trucks. Currently, they read your ECU calibration and match it to a list provided by the manufacturer. One of my partner shops in Cali can't register their own project car without flashing it back to the OEM calibration. Hard to do as it was naturally aspirated and now has a big front mount IC and supercharger strapped to the engine. So they're parting it out. Tried to get them to move to Texas but it ain't always easy to move a business that size.

CARB has pulled several requests to the EPA for regulation of large fleet vehicles and locomotives along with diesel fleet vehicles (again, 18 wheeler-size stuff).

The Procal tune for the BRaptor does all the things you list, except for disabling auto start/stop.

I think we are talking about the same one, is ProCal not part of Ford Performance? I also thought the ProCal disabled the Start/Stop. I guess I will find out tomorrow when it is installed.

I believe that earlier versions of the ProCal provided the option to eliminate Auto Start/Stop (ASS) for other Bronco models however, this isn’t available on the current release for the Raptor.

The easy work around is to program ASS off to the “R” button along with your preference for steering, shocks, exhaust & GOAT mode

I am actually ok with having the start/stop feature. I don't do that much city driving and the start/stop on the Raptor is pretty low key compared to the only other one I experienced which was in a friend's BMW. That one was flat out annoying and I would have stuck a pencil in my eye if I had to put up with that regularly. I obviously did not buy the Raptor for mpg, but I maximized all the things that I could during the first 7000 miles to see how much mpg I could get such as start/stop, cruise control, conservative driving like speed limit and I was generally on country roads at about 55 mph. My average mpg according to the vehicle's read out was 17.9 mpg and that included a trip from California to Moab including lots of wheeling. Of course if all my driving was in the city, I would be lucky to get 12 mpg. I am looking forward to the tune, but I gotta say that with or without aftermarket equipment, this Bronco Raptor-and it is my daily driver-is the funnest vehicle I have ever driven.

Sorry @Ironmike - the current FP Tune for the other Broncos (2.3 & 2.7) does NOT allow for disabling ASS however, it did prior to the mid 2024 update tho.

Thread derail so apologies but man I'm lucky if I average 14mpg and I work at it on occasion just to see what I can get it up to. I think my frontal lobe would explode if I hit 17.9mpg. I think my best to date is 14.7mpg. I drove to Houston recently, top completely off, sun shade and with a tail wind, I averaged about the same. On the return trip, headed into the wind I averaged 12.1 with the cruise control set at 70mph. I'm beginning to think there's something not quite right as even with 93 Shell, I've never seen 15mpg. My daily commute is 90% highway. Still, like you, absolutely love this thing. It's f*ckig ridiculous and it gets better gas mileage than my last vehicle so I guess it's a win..
