Ford Released air/oil separator

Got it. Is there a concern for oil consumption? BRaptors carry 7.5 quarts. Does this enhance performance? I am curious why this is an add-on when Ford or most manufacturers didn't go with it.

Not being an ass. I seriously want to understand.

If there is concern about oil starvation, a dry sump would be ideal, but Ford opted not to. Burping a mist that ends as a minimal loss is a hard justification for the price and potential issues unless I am missing something.

There is no reason that you should install this if you don't see the value. There is no guarantee that it is going to save you money. You don't "need" it.

It helps keep your turbo systems clean and functional and maximizes performance.

The actual benefits of this are hard to measure. Some claim that it helps with performance and long-term reliability, others claim that it is snake oil and does not produce noticeable results.

There are certainly other, more intrusive, mods that provide more noticeable impacts. Some people prefer to spend their money on those types of mods only. And that's perfectly acceptable.

Now my question, given the definitions above, is whether Ford Performance's Air Oil Separator actually puts the caught oil back into the system or if it only collects it in the two catch cans?

Preventative maintenance, as carbon (oil) deposits on top of the valves, as explained in this video, it's an inherited problem with all direct injection engines.

After getting this installed, there is a loud rattle coming from the engine bay at the end of slowing down to a stop and at the start of mild acceleration. It's quite noticeable and annoying. I will have them look into it on Monday.

Looking under the hood, I don't hear the rattle when stopped and the hood open. The center catch can is mounted on a bracket and it's surprisingly high in the engine bay. That center catch can and bracket vibrate very significantly and quickly while the engine is running.

Does the center catch can still have the same movement with the hood up? If not, possibility the bracket wasn't properly secured.

It still has the same movement. So it might have been something else that they disturbed while doing the install.

It is basically the same. Rattle while mildly pulling away and I believe slowing down. I will try to tighten things up. Then if need be call the dealer for suggestions and finally take it in if I can't get it sorted. I think the catch can on the drivers side may be rubbing and therefore making a rattle. Just a guess from a quick look under the hood.

We shall see. Shame they didn't tell you what the fix was....

If I were closer I would have them look at it right away.

Yeah, sorry I couldn't get more detail on that. I figured that someone would want to know, but the service advisor didn't know any details. I hope that you can sort it out without the long drive.

It seems the drive catch can is vibrating against another engine component. When in drive both those cans vibrate a lot. The higher passenger side can is really vibrating but it doesn't hit anything.


Yesterday was a long day and I was tired and only looked inside the hood quickly. Not having the engine in drive the cans don't rattle or move.

It seems I can just bend a pipe out of the way and bend the catch can slightly.

Have a call into the shop and we will see. Just a very slight bend now and it is not rattling while stopped. It seems an easy fix.

I was looking at these last night. The last picture with the drivers side can in the instructions is different in my engine. You can easily see the knocking if this can is moving a lot.

Super easy fix. Master Tech said pull the AC line. Just what I thought - just bend it out of the way. I did what he said. Basically pulled it and slightly bent it to the right as you can see. Not bending the catch can at all.

Absolutely no rattle or noise. I even took it on a very rough dirt road and bounced it around a bit. Nothing. All good! So glad I got these.

Yeah he's a master tech (they have a special designation for them - able to install Performance Parts). He also runs the entire service department.
