After using my catch can for a few thousand miles I have pulled it from my vehicle permanently. When I first installed it I noticed a small amount of liquid inside after a thousand miles. I also noticed a persistent smell of fuel and oil in my garage that I didn’t associate with the catch can at the time. No smell in vehicle cabin. After reading some conflicting opinions about the necessity of catch cans in general I removed it and returned the truck to stock. It was then I noticed that the smell of fuel and oil in my garage was gone. I waited a few months and put the catch can back on. Double and triple checked the installation. All visible o rings and hoses appear intact. Lo and behold my garage reeks of fuel and oil again. It’s bad enough my wife is asking what I spilled in the garage.
I am not disparaging UPR as a company at all. Can’t say whether it’s design in the product or hoses that are permeable to vapors or what is causing the smell. All I have is results confirmed twice.

Curious about others thoughts and experiences with catch cans. Mine is not going back. In fact, first person to pm and pay for shipping can have it.

I have the UPR single valve catch can and we haven't ever noticed any fuel odors in either garage or anywhere near the Bronco Raptor. It's an enclosed loop system, guessing there may be some leak, but you've done your due diligence. I'm going to pay closer attention now, maybe my sniffer just isn't as good as yours.

I have the same one. It’s not a subtle smell at all so I doubt it’s something you’re missing due to lack of sniffer quality. I found a discussion in an old eco boost forum mentioning a persistent smell from catch cans, not any specific manufacturer. They all came back to blaming it on hoses that were excessively permeable to the vapors involved. On mine, it appears everything is intact, all fittings clicked in tight. I agree it likely leaking vapor somewhere in the system. I’m just not particularly interested in chasing down the source since just removing it solves the issue. I may just reach out to UPR and see what they say.
Easiest route is just to move on.

September, I installed the J&L Oil Separator 3.0 Oil Separators 3096P-B. Very simple install, no unusual odors, works great.

🌶️ Raptor has the UPR dual valve; currently used similar to the single valve setup. No odor.

This is evidence that Ford agrees that oil blow-by is a real issue for direct-injection (DI) turbocharged engines.

I like the Ford developed catch can that was engineered and tested specifically for our Bronco Raptors. I would expect it has higher efficiency at capturing the oil than the aftermarket systems. We know the UPR system is working and definitely better than without, just unable to confirm it's efficiency.

Ford catch can currently on sale at Lethal Performance.

I agree, I am putting this in and doing the ProCal at the same time. Grateful for all the information here. Thanks

I will follow up with my thoughts on both once done.

I also talked myself into purchasing the Ford Performance Warthog Air/Oil Separator and will be installing over the winter months. I will then next fall be able to compare the captured mixture to my current UPR single valve Catch Can. Note that I still haven't noticed any odor from the UPR catch can until I open it to empty, the odor is a strong gas/oil mixture smell. Photo's below are deceiving as I'm sure the extracted mixture wouldn't taste as good as it looks.
This is the amount in the UPR container after 2765 miles this year.

 that color dons't look good. looks like a water and oil mix? have you do any deep water crossing or something?
Your correct in there may be moisture with the oil and gas mixture and it's same color as the first 2k miles oil change/canister emptying. Dry paved roads only May-Oct. Possibly due to operating in cooler temperatures? Engine oil appears the normal dark color when draining.

I'm at Ford as we speak getting the ProCal tune and the Air/Oil separator. It will be interesting to see any differences for @TurboS and what I get out of the cans. Great post.

Back from install of ProCal and Ford's Air/Oil separator. I have a slight rattle and hum. The rattle seems to be when you are just starting off or going slow. Kinda sounds like the catch cans rattling. The two units themselves seem well mounted.

As well, when I was just about to shut the engine off there was a rough hum, which I did record. Once I put it into neutral it stopped. Back into drive it came back.....odd.

I did take the beast on some very wide private trails and kicked it. Flat footing up to about 90 then it starts to weave and you have to ease off. I will do a better report of the ProCal. For now this rattle and hum is my focus.

Any thoughts?

I know someone on here had a rattle when they first installed. That sounded like the one of the can holders were loose. I will have to search for that.

Edit: I had a quick look again. I may have figured out where the rattle is coming from. One catch can rubbing. I will post a picture and look into it further.

Thanks

That's definitely a logical answer, I know mine has not looked this way either time I have checked mine. I am so wishing I took a picture now just for comparison. Have had no issues and the oil in the catch can is roughly as dark as coffee. I use Ford full synthetic oil. Oil still looks really good when changed. Changed at 3k and 7k now.
